Starlink is now available in Botswana.

Starlink, SpaceX’s Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet service, is now available in Botswana, marking an important achievement for the Southern African nation. Rebecca Slick Hunter, Starlink’s Director of Global Licensing and Market Activation, confirmed Botswana’s inclusion in the growing list of countries using Starlink’s services.

Starlink License in Botswana

Botswana’s decision to license Starlink follows a meeting in May 2024 between President Mokgweetsi Masisi and Ben MacWilliams, Starlink’s Director of Global Licensing and Activation, during a business summit in the United States. At this meeting, MacWilliams expressed interest in securing a license to operate in Botswana—a proposal that President Masisi quickly approved. The Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) then expedited the licensing process, completing it within just two weeks.

This rapid approval came after a period when BOCRA had imposed legal restrictions, making the import, use, or sale of Starlink kits or services illegal, with penalties for violators. The government’s change in stance underscores its recognition of the potential benefits Starlink can bring to Botswana’s connectivity.

Botswana has some of the highest data costs in Africa, which has hindered widespread internet access for its 2.63 million residents. By licensing Starlink, the country aims to lower these costs and provide more reliable internet services, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

How is Starkink in Botswana

For residential users, Starlink’s service will cost BWP 4,820 (USD 359) for the hardware, with a monthly subscription fee of BWP 688 (USD 51). This pricing model presents a viable alternative to traditional internet services, potentially reducing data costs and increasing internet accessibility across the nation.

The introduction of Starlink in Botswana is a major step toward improving the country’s digital connectivity and reducing the digital divide. The government’s proactive approach, paired with Starlink’s cutting-edge satellite technology, is set to enhance internet access, drive digital inclusion, and support socio-economic growth in Botswana
